A group of five people who had travelled to visit Sri Pada during the off-season were involved in an accident after their car veered off the road and plunged into a canal near Mohini Ella on the Nallathanniya–Maskeliya main road.
A group of residents from the Vavuniya and Kilinochchi areas had arrived at the Nallathanniya Police Station at around 11.00 p.m. yesterday (19) and informed police of their intention to visit Sri Pada.
However, due to the prevailing adverse weather conditions, police officers advised them not to travel at night and to return the following morning.
While they were returning in search of accommodation following the police advice, the car reportedly skidded off the road and fell into a canal near Mohini Ella at around midnight.
Three men and two women were travelling in the vehicle at the time of the accident.
Although the car sustained serious damage, none of the five occupants suffered any injuries.
Nallathanniya Police are conducting further investigations into the incident.
