Another petition challenging the Bill relating to the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, gazetted by the government, has been filed before the Supreme Court.
The petition was filed by social media activists Iraj Weeraratne, Chamara Wijesuriya, Nandana Kuda Meegoda, Nilanthasath Sara Gamage and Milinda Rajapaksha.
The petitioners claim that certain provisions contained in the proposed Bill could violate the independence of the judiciary as well as freedom of expression.
Accordingly, the petitioners have requested the Supreme Court to rule that the relevant Bill must be approved through a referendum.
