A group of estate workers picking tea leaves were attacked by wasps this morning (31), leaving 17 workers injured.
Sixteen female estate workers and one male worker who sustained injuries in the attack were admitted to the Dickoya Base Hospital for treatment.
The attack reportedly occurred at the 7th tea field in the upper section of Raja Estate, within the Hatton Police Division, after a wasp nest built on a tree and a rock was disturbed.
The wasps then attacked a group of estate workers who were working nearby.
An attempt was made to create smoke to drive away the wasps and rescue the affected workers. However, a plantation worker who was attacked said that the wasps also attacked those who were creating the smoke.
