A special government housing project launched to provide permanent homes for families displaced by the ‘Didwa’ disaster in Badulla District has made significant progress within just three months.

The foundation stone for the project was laid on April 30 under the patronage of Minister of Plantation and Community Infrastructure Samantha Vidyarathna on state land near the Police Training School in the Medayaya Grama Niladhari Division of Mahiyanganaya.

In the first phase, construction of 11 houses began for families who had completely lost their homes, while each beneficiary received a Rs. 2 million cheque to commence construction.

All 11 houses have now reached roof level, and construction has also begun on five additional houses at the same site. As a result, a total of 16 houses are currently being built at a rapid pace.

Beneficiaries say they are ready to complete the remaining work as soon as funding for the second phase is released. The project, implemented under the supervision of the Mahiyanganaya Divisional Secretariat, is being recognised as a model initiative that provides permanent housing solutions for disaster-affected families within a short period.
